I consider Martyrs to be the king of New French Extremity. The impact of trauma, survivor's guilt, the willingness of people to sink to the lowest of depraved acts to be a part of a group. This movie is a great example of how to use brutality to speak to the human condition. I think it is a wonderful work of cinema.

For me it falls into the category of being a great movie that's still overrated by the diehard fans. It is brutal and hard to continue with especially because the payoff is only at the very end.
